Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha were both sons of Rishi Kashyapa and Diti. It’s believed they were conceived at a very inauspicious time during dusk, and both turned out to be fearsome, evil Asura.

Hiranyaksha was killed by Vishnu in the form of Varaha, when he abducted Bhoodevi, and took her into the ocean, plunging the three worlds into chaos. Furious at his brother’s death Hiranyakashipu swore revenge on Vishnu and did intense penance, finally Brahma appeared, and asked him for a boon.

That is when Hiranyakashipu asked

“Grant me that I not die within any residence or outside any residence, during the daytime or at nighttime, nor in the ground or in the sky. Grant me that my death not be brought about by any weapons or hands, nor by any human or animal. Grant me that I not meet death from any entity, living or nonliving created by you. Grant me, further, that I not be killed by any deity or demon or by any other organisms and divinities.”

Brahma granted him the boon, and Hiranyakashipu felt he was as good as invincble, as no one could satisfy those conditions. And conquering heaven, made the Devatas his slaves, and began to harass, persecute all Vishnu devotees, locking them up in dungeons, torturing them.

Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlada was however a devout Vishnu bhakta much to his father’s chagrin.When Hiranyakashipu was unable to change his son’s mind, he ordered him to be killed. However at every attempt to kill him, Prahlada was saved. He even tried to get Prahlada burnt alive through this sister Holika, but it was she who ended up being burnt to death.

When Hiranyakashipu asked Prahlada where Vishnu was present, he replied he was omniscient, and found everywhere. He pointed to a pillar, and asked if his Vishnu was there, to which Prahlada replied “Yes he was and will be”.

When a furious Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar, the fierce form of Vishnu, Narasimha emerged, who was neither man nor beast. It was twilight, neither day nor night. He picked up Hiranyakashipu and took him to the threshold, neither indoors nor outdoors, and placed him on his lap, neither earth nor sky. And finally he killed him with his nails, tearing apart his stomach, which were not weapons.Vishnu had outwitted Hiranyakashipu as Narasimha, getting over and each every conditon in the boon granted by Brahma.

Devi is portrayed not just as a goddess, but as Brahman itself — the ultimate reality and source of all creation.The text emphasizes devotional worship (bhakti) as a path to spiritual liberation, blending Advaita Vedanta with Shakta philosophy. The Devi Gita in Book 7, chapters 31–40, this section mirrors the Bhagavad Gita but is spoken by the Goddess herself, offering metaphysical insights and guidance.

With 12 Skandhas, 318 Chapters,and 18,000 Verses, it’s one of the most expansive Puranas, rich in mythology, theology, and cosmology. Scholars date its composition between the 9th and 14th centuries CE, with some parts possibly added later to reflect evolving devotional practices. Alongside Devi Mahatmya, it’s foundational to the Shakta tradition, elevating the Goddess as the supreme force behind creation, preservation, and destruction.

The Goddess manifests as Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, and Mahakali, embodying the three gunas — sattva, rajas, and tamas. Even gods like Vishnu and Shiva are shown seeking Devi’s grace, underscoring her supremacy.It explores Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic forms of devotion, culminating in Para Bhakti — the highest form of surrender.

Traditionally attributed to Vyasa, the legendary compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata. It’s believed he narrated it to King Janamejaya, son of Parikshit. Most scholars place its composition between the 9th and 14th centuries CE, though some parts may be older or added later. The Devi Gita section (Book 7, Chapters 31–40) likely emerged around the 13th century.

It’s particularly influential in Bengal, Odisha, and South India, where Devi worship has deep historical roots. Evidence from Mathura and Bengal suggests Devi-centric worship existed as early as the 2nd century CE, laying the foundation for texts like this one. The Devi Bhagavatam continues to be recited in temples, homes, and spiritual gatherings, especially during Durga Puja and Navaratri, reinforcing its role as a living scripture.

Skandha 1 – Introduction & Cosmic Origins

This covers dialogue between sages in Naimisharanya , praise of the Devi and her supremacy, and creation myths and the slaying of demons like Madhu and Kaitabha.

Skandha 2 – Genealogies & Mythic Lineages

This covers the birth of Vyasa and other key figures.Stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana interwoven with Devi’s influence.

Skandha 3 – Manifestations of the Goddess

It deals with the Creation of Tridevi: Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, Mahakali. Philosophical exposition on gunas and tattvas, and Devi’s powers and cosmic roles.

Skandha 4 – Avatars & Karma

This deals with incarnations of Vishnu and their connection to Devi as well as larma, dharma, and the interplay of divine will.

Skandha 5 – Mahishasura Mardini Narrative

This has a detailed account of Devi’s battle with Mahishasura. The emergence of fierce forms like Durga and Kali, symbolizing divine wrath and protection.

Skandha 6 – Devas, Demons & Cosmic Balance

This deals with the battles between Devas and Asuras, Devi’s intervention to restore dharma and philosophical reflections on maya and illusion.

Skandha 7 – Devi Gita & Spiritual Teachings

The Devi Gita is a spiritual dialogue akin to the Bhagavad Gita, covering bhakti, yoga, and liberation, and depicts Devi as supreme Brahman.

Skandha 8 – Rituals & Worship

This has the instructions for Navaratri and other sacred observances, modes of worship, mantras, and spiritual disciplines.

Skandha 9 – Cosmic Geography & Divine Realms

Contains description of Manidvipa, the celestial abode of Devi. The stories of devotees and divine interventions, and cultural references to Mlecchas and Yavanas.

Skandha 10 – Devotional Narratives

This has tales of kings and sages who attain liberation through Devi’s grace with emphasis on para bhakti (supreme devotion).

Skandha 11 – Philosophical Dialogues

This has iscussions on moksha, dharma, and the nature of reality with integration of Vedantic and Tantric ideas.

Skandha 12 – Conclusion & Final Teachings

This summarizes Devi’s glories, affirming her as the ultimate refuge, with blessings for those who read or hear the Purana.

Each Skandha is a spiritual journey — from mythic battles to metaphysical truths, from ritual practice to cosmic philosophy.

The Devi Bhagavatam, combines Advaita Vedanta and Samkhya, forming Shaktadvaitavada — a non-dualistic philosophy centered on the Goddess, while other Puranas, tend to follow Vaishnava, Shaiva, or Smarta traditions, often with dualistic or theistic leanings.

Though sometimes classified as an Upa-Purana, many traditions and scholars (like Vanamali and Vishnulok Bihari Srivastava) regard it as a Mahapurana due to its scope and theological richness.

The Chakravyuha( or Padmavyuha) looked something like the one in the figure above. The basic concept of the Chakravyuha, was that it would be a multi tier formation, arranged in the form of concentric rings, each tier consisting of soldiers. While the infantry would be forming the outer tiers, the most experienced, skilled warriors would be at the inner tiers. The point here is to capture the enemy by placing him at the end of a series of concentric circles, during the conflict. The main pattern here is two layers of soldiers on either side, and other soldiers at a striking distance away from them. Here the strategy is to engage the target, draw him in and capture. So we have two layers of soldiers who engage the target, from either side, and them move ahead. As soon as this happens, the next layer of soldiers move inside, to engage the target.

Now imagine this formation attacking the enemy, what would effectively happen, is the moving circles enclose the warriors, creating a sort of wall around him, leaving no route out. If you take a footballing analogy, it is akin to marking the best player of the opposite team, and restricting him from scoring the goals.

Imagine a wolf pack hunting a deer here, each one, hunts the deer, and allowing it to escape. The deer believes it has escaped, until it encounters another. In reality, the previous wolf, has just retreated to make way for another wolf. As the deer evades one wolf to another, it reaches a stage, where it is exhausted, and the entire pack, now descends on it, trapping him from all ends.

The strategy in a Chakravyuha is somewhat similar. If I have to break it down, goes like this

1. Target surrounded by 2 layer of soldiers either side, who engage him, briefly and move on. Now this is generally the lesser fighters, the more formidable ones are kept in reserve.

2. Now once the first layer moves on, the target is again surrounded and engaged by another layer, slightly more skilled than those in the first layer. But more important, he is encircled by two layers, without him actually knowing it.

3. This process keeps repeating again and again, and by the time, the target realizes it, he is caught in a seven layered trap, from which breaking out is impossible.

4. When the last layer comes in, the soldiers and warriors there, signal for all the others who have been turned outside to turn inwards. And that’ s it, the target is trapped dead shut.

In a sense, at every stage, the target is engaged, and made to believe that he has beaten back the opponents. When in reality, the opposing layers, actually make a strategic retreat of sorts, deceiving him, into believing he is winning, when in reality he is not.

The Chakravyuha was designed by Drona, as an attempt to capture Yudhistir alive and defeat the Pandavas again. Now only 4 people on the Pandavas side, knew how to penetrate the Chakravyuha and break it- Arjun, Krishna, Pradyumna and Abhimanyu. Of these 4 Pradyumna choose not to fight at Kurukshetra, and Abhimanyu knew how to enter it, but not exit it. That left only Krishna and Arjun, the Kauravas took care of that, by mounting an attack on the Virat kingdom, by the Trigartas. What this meant was both Arjun and Krishna had to be away from the battlefield, and the Pandavas were rendered vulnerable now.

The only other option left was Abhimanyu now, who told them that while he knew how to enter the Chakravyuha, he did not know how to exit. The toughest part in breaking the Chakravyuha was this, assuming you break one tier of defense, and enter the next tier, the former tier immediately regroups again. Now unless you know how to get your way back, you are effectively trapped inside. Yudhistir assured Abhimanyu that they would follow him, once he breaks inside, and would mount an assault.

Enter Jayadratha, the brother in law of Kauravas, married to their sister Dussala. Apparently during the Vanvaas time, Jayadratha, had carried away Draupadi forcibly, wanting to make her his queen. However Arjun and Bhim caught up with him, and defeated him. They were about to kill him, when Yudhistir, intervened saying that would make their sister Dussala, a widow. Jayadratha's life was spared, but he was humiliated, by shaving his head, leaving only a patch of hair. He swore revenge on the Pandavas for this, and prayed to Lord Shiva, asking for a boon, by which he could defeat them. Shiva, said that it was impossible to defeat the Pandavas, especially Arjun. He however granted him a boon, saying that for one day however he could keep the Pandavas at bay, that too excluding Arjun.

When Abhimanyu broke through the first layer of the Chakravyuha, and entered inside, the Pandavas sans Arjun followed suit. However that layer once again regrouped, and this time it was Jayadratha guarding it. Taking advantage of the boon offered to him, Jayadratha, kept Yudhistir, Bheem, Nakul, Sahadev at bay. What this meant was as Abhimanyu entered deeper into the Chakravyuha, he was all alone, as layer after layer behind him closed off. The Pandavas could not follow Abhimanyu inside, as Jayadratha held them off, in a fiercely contested fight.

Abhimanyu did not enter the Chakravyuha alone, he knew the dangers of it. What he expected was that he would lead the way, and the rest of the Pandavas would be following and guarding him. Alas with Jayadratha proving to be the obstacle, he was forced to fight a lonely battle against the Maharathis of the Kaurava army, resulting in his death.

Also it was not possible for a flying wedge formation to break the Chakravyuha, for the reason, it was divided into layers of concentric circles. So every time a layer broke, it would immediately regroup again, in effect it was both a defensive and offensive formation.

Now coming to the first part of the question, the Vedas while having some of the highest philosophical concepts ever, on God and Dharma, were still beyond the comprehension level of most ordinary people. And that is where epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata come in. Both of them belong to the genre of Itihasa, which primarily is a narrative of past events, and includes teachings on the goals of human life.

Philosophies like Dwaita, Adwaita on the other hand are more complex, more difficult to understand for a lay person. They need a lot of reading, analyzing and understanding the various sub texts in it. It is not easy to interpret and explain them.

Now in order to take the higher philosophical teachings of the Vedas to the common masses, there needed to be a representation somewhere, a character who personified those concepts. Now a commoner might not understand the concepts of Dharma or Karma if taught him to directly. But when you create a character, Rama or Krishna, and through them try to communicate the essence of Dharma or Karma, it registers much more easily in the mind. Dharma on it's own is an abstract term, a sense of one's duty, but when you see it through the life of Rama, you see some one who followed it in the true sense all his life. Or when Krishna taught about the concept of Karma to Arjun at Kurukshetra, you could understand it's essence, than what you would have by reading the Vedas.

Both Vyasa and Valmiki bought the higher philosophical concepts of the Vedas to the ordinary people, through their works. The clash of Dharma and Adharma, is bought out so well in the characters of Ram and Ravan, or Yudhistir and Duryodhan, that through them, one can understand the lofty concepts of the Vedas. The consequences of being on the side of Adharma, though personally following Dharma can be seen in the tragic tale of Karna. In a sense the epics like Ramayan and Mahabharat interpreted the Vedas, and managed to bring the essence of their teachings to the ordinary people, and in a way also laid down the rules of human conduct too.

The Ramayan and Mahabharat are epics we grew up reading, listening to, watching on TV or movies. We are familiar with the various characters, motivations, tales, sub plots in them. The Gita is something most of us Hindus are familiar, as it has been quoted in almost every situation, every place, and it is a part of most households too. In a sense, the Ramayan, Mahabharat and Geeta is what keeps the common Hindus in touch with their roots, they are the layman's understanding of Hinduism.

And this makes it imperative for every Hindu to have some knowledge of these two great epics to be in touch with their roots.
