It’s ancient name was Pithikapuram, and is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethams, the places where Sati’s body parts fell, after her corpse was cut into pieces by Sudarshana Chakra. Her left hand is believed to have fallen here, and she is worshipped as Purohitika Devi.It was mentioned in Samudragupta’s inscription at Prayag Raj as Pishtapura, one of 12 the kingdoms of Dakshinapatha whom he had conquered, along with Vengi, Kanchi,Kurala.

Puruhutika Devi is the main deity in Pithapuram, shown with 4 hands, one holding a kalasa containing Amrit, another holding the Madi Phala,while the rear hands hold a shield and an axe.

Apart from being a Mahashakti Peetham, Pithapuram is also significant as one of the Trigaya Kshetrams, the other two being Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Biraja Temple at Jajpur in Odisha. This is called as Padha Gaya Kshetram.

As per the Sthala Purana, there was an Asura ruler Gayasura, who was a devotee of Vishnu. He did penance to Vishnu and asked for a boon by which his body would manifest itself with all the divinity of the Punya Kshetras. And his body became as holy, with none of the sins able to touch him, even the small beings that died on his body, achieved Moksha, due to the divine presence. By the power of the divinity manifested in him, his good deeds and the Yagnas he did, Gayasura acquired the throne of Indra, who did penance to Brahma, to get back the position he lost.

Brahma told him that he was planning to conduct a great Yagna, for which he needed the holiest place ever. Gayasura being a giant of a personality, offered his own body to conduct the Yagna on. So huge was his body that on stretching, his head rested in Bodh Gaya, while his feet rested in Pithapuram. The Yagna on his body would last for 7 days, during which he would not be getting up.

However when the Devas requested Shiva to disturb the Yagna, to ensure Gayasura does not become too powerful, he took the form of a cock, and crowed at an early hour on the 7th day, just before the Yagna was to end. Thinking it was morning, and the end of the Yagna, Gayasura got up before it was over, thus disturbing it. However he got a boon from Vishnu, Brahma that due to his devotion, the 3 parts of his body, would become Punya Kshetras.

Those 3 parts are what are called Tri Gaya Kshetras, the head or Siro Gaya at Bodh Gaya, the middle part or Nabhi Gaya at Biraja Temple, Jajpur, Odisha and the feet at Pithapuram, which is the reason why it’s also called as Pada Gaya Kshetram.

Since Shiva appeared in the form of a cock at Pithapuram, he is worshipped here as Kukkuteswara Swamy, and this temple is right opposite to the Puruhitika Devi temple.

The Kukkuteswara Swamy temple faces north, and as soon as one enters it, there is a large tank called the Pada Gaya Sarovar, and it’s believed taking a dip here is equivalent to that of taking in Ganga. And near the Dhwaja Stambha are large imprints of Gayasura.

The complex has shrines for Chandeeshwara Swamy, Kala Bhairava who is the Kshetra Palaka here, Sri Subramanya Swamy, Siddhi Ganapati and Shri Dattatreya. There is an old banyan tree in the temple complex called Audumbara Vriksha, and it’s believed anyone touching those would be blessed with good fortune. The main temple of Kukkuteswara is located in the center. The temple also has a large Nandi carved out of a single rock, as well as a shrine dedicated to Shri Raja Rajeshwari Devi, the consort of Kukkuteswara Swamy here.

The Kunti Madhava temple at Pithapuram is one of the Pancha Madhava Kshetras, believed to have been built by Indra to atone for the killing of Vritasura. The other 4 are Bindu Madhava(Kashi), Veni Madhav(Prayag Raj), Sethu Madhava(Rameswaram) ,Sundara Madhava(Thiruvananthapuram).

Among the Trigaya Kshetrams, Vishnu is worshipped at Bodh Gaya as Gadadhara, while Brahma is worshipped in form of Biraja Devi at Jajpur and Shiva as Kukkuteshwara at Pitapuram, as per Gayasura’s wish. This is the reason why these three Gaya Kshetrams are considered auspicious to do Pinda Pradhana and Shraddha Karmas for the departed souls of our ancestors.

Pithapuram is also home to Sripada Srivallabha Swamy who is believed to be an avatar of Dattatreya himself. His home is now a temple, and it’s the only place in India, which has a swayambhu murthy of Dattatreya.

Apart from the temples, Pithapuram was one of the well known Samsthanams in Coastal Andhra, of whom Surya Rao Bahadur, was quite prominent as a patron of arts and literature. is located right on the Chennai-Howrah line by rail, if you are travelling by road, you can take a detour from the National Highway towards Kakinada, either from Rajahmundry or Vizag.

If you are visiting Annavaram, you could include Pithapuram too in your trip, as it’s located close by. The temples, the Shakti Peetam,the lush green paddy fields nearby make it worth a visit.

Again of these Shakti Peethas, you have 4 Adi Shakti Peethas, considered the major ones, and all are in the Eastern region. The Kamakhya temple at Gauhati, Kalighata at Kolkata, Tara Tarini at Berhampur and Bimala Pada at Puri, which is part of the Puri Jagannatha complex.

Apart from the Adi Shakti Peethas, you have 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, which are mentioned in the Ashta Dasha Shakti Peetha Stothram by Adi Shankara, of which two are not in India, Shankari Devi at Trincomalee( Sri Lanka) and Sharada Peetha at Muzaffarabad( POK).

The Sharada Peeth in Muzaffarabad, POK is mostly in ruins now, while Kamakhya is considered as both an Adi Shakti Peetha and Maha Shakti Peetha.

Of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, three are particularly considered sacred, Kamakhya,where the yoni fell, is associated with the act of creation. Sarvamangala, Gaya, where the breasts fell and is associated with nourishment. And Avantika, Ujjain, where the upper lip fell with destruction.

The most prominent of the Maha Shakti Peethas in Telugu states is Brahmaramba at Srisailam, which is also one of the Jyotirlinga Kshetras where Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna, making it one of the holiest spots for Hindus. It's believed that Hiranyakasipu, the Asura ruler, did his penance to Shiva here at Srisailam, while Ahobilam was where he held court.

Rama and Seeta in Treta Yuga, the Pandavas in Dwapara Yuga, visited this place during their exile, there is a pond named after Bhima here.It is also believed to be one of the 3 Shiva Lingas that make up Trilinga Desham, the older name for Andhra/ Telangana, the other two being Draksharama in East Godavari district and Kaleshwaram in Telangana.

Since Shiva was worshipped mostly with Jasmines at Srisailam, he was called as Mallikarjuna( Malli in telugu is Jasmine) or more colloquially as Mallana. Shakti is called as Brahmaramba as it's believed she worshipped Shiva in form of a bee ( Brahmara) here. As per history the Vishnukundins were the earliest devotees of Mallikarjuna Swamy, during the Kakatiya rule, they contributed to the temple's growth, the vimana gopuram was believed to have been constructed by Mallamadevi, sister of Ganapatideva.

It’s Golden Age was during the rule of the Reddy Rajulu, Prolaya Vema Reddi constructed the pathway to the temple as also to the Patalaganga. The Vijayanagara rulers made major contributions, esp the Mukhamandapam and Southern Gopuram. Srikrishna Deva Raya, visited Srisailam in 1516 AD, after his succesful campaign against the Gajapatis, and constructed the Salumandapas here. He also constructed the Rajagopuram.

Chattrapathi Shivaji visited Srisailam in 1674, restored the temple to it's glory, which had fallen into neglect after fall of Vijayanagara. This is the statue of him at Srisailam, and there is also a Shivaji Mandapam at Srisailam in his honor.

Jogulamba temple at Alampur in Mehboobnagar dt( now Jogulamba Gadwal), Telangana is the other Mahashakti peetham in Telugu states. Sati's upper teeth are believed to have fallen here, this is also called Navabrahma Theertha, Shiva is worshipped here as Brahmeswara.Alampur Navabrahma Temples are a cluster of 9 temples dedicated to Shiva, located at the Sangama of the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers, making this a very holy spot. Built by the Badami Chalukyas, these temples are known for their architectural excellence.

Sangameshwara Temple at Alampur is the most well known at Alampur, constructed by Pulakesin I, in typical Chalukyan style. Built at Kudaveli, where the Sangama of Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers takes place, somewhere in the 7th century, must visit.The temples at Alampur bear the typical Badami Chalukya style of architecture, which typically tend to have a smaller gopuram, in contrast to the large ones you have down South. You find this kind of style in North Karnataka, primarily Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal.

The Navabrahma Temples at Alampur are as follows

1) Taraka Brahma- One of the smaller temples, has deities carved into the ceiling.

2) Svarga Brahma- Very elaborate sculptures. Has Shiva in Nataraja form, fables from Panchatantra.

3) Padma Brahma Temple- Last temple to be built in the group, somewhat incomplete.

4) Bala Brahma- Has sculptures of Saptamatrikas, Shivratri celebrated in grand style here.

5) Garuda Brahma- Has a large sculpture of Garuda.

6) Kumara Brahma- Again one of the finest temples in the complex, pillars have many miniature carvings.

7) Arka Brahma- Mostly in ruins now

8) Vishva Brahma Temple- Again has very intricate carvings

9) Vira Brahma Temple- The northern most one.

Jogulamba Temple at Alampur is one of the 18 Mahashakti Peethas, this has Shakti in a rather fierce form, sitting on a corpse, with scorpion, frog and lizard on head. As she grants Siddhi in Yoga, she was called Yogulamma, meaning mother of Yogis, Jogulamba is the local name.

Jogulamba is flanked by Chandi, Mundi. The original idol was shifted to a new temple in 2005, beautiful one with granite flooring surrounded by water. The locals state that since Jogulamba is Devi's Ugra Rupa, the water is meant to cool the atmosphere around her. There is a small Yellamma temple too near Jogulamba temple. It's believed to be where Parashuram killed his mother Renuka and she came back to life here. Locals worship Renuka as Yellamma in Telangana, and u can find many temples dedicated to her there.

The next two Shaktipeethas in Andhra Pradesh, are both located in East Godavari district- Manikyamba at Draksharama, which is also one of the Pancharamas and Puruhatika Devi at Pithapuram near Kakinada.

Surrounded by lush green paddy fields, Draksharama is one of the Pancharamas, five Shiva Temples located at Amaravati( Guntur dt), Samarlakota( E.Godavari), Palakollu and Bhimavaram( W.Godavari). These Pancharamas are so called as they are believed to be places of rest. Apparently when Kartikeya battled Tarakasura, he could not kill him, as the latter had the powerful Shiva Linga with him that protected. Vishnu then advised Kartikeya to first shatter the Shiva Linga, and then kill Tarakasura. However he also warned that it would grow very fast.

Kartikeya shattered the Shiva Linga with his spear, and the 5 spots where the pieces fell were the Pancharamas. However he had to ensure that the Lingas had to be stopped, as they grew rapidly, and so the Devas hammered nails there. This is why the Lingas are very tall here.

Draksharama is one of the Mahashakti Peethas, where Sati's left cheek is believed to have fallen. As per some versions Manikyamba is believed to be a more corrupted version of Mainakadevi, daughter of Himavanta.

The more popular version states that Manikyamba was the daughter of a prostitute, and decided that she would marry Bhimeswara only. After severe penance, Shiva was pleased with her devotion, and she became his consort. This was mentioned by Telugu poet Srinatha in Bhimakandam.

Also in Draksharama you have the Ashta Someshwara temples, smaller Lingas consecrated by the Sapta Rishis. Initially the Shiva Lingam had such intensity that the Rishis were not able to approach it. So they installed Lingas in 8 directions, that wud cool the intensity. Draksharama Bhimeswara Temple was built by the Chalukyan ruler Bhima, which also accounts for the name. Also there is a pond Sapta Godavari, believed to contain waters from the 7 tributaries of the Godavari, consecrated by the Sapta Rishis to worship the Shiva Linga.

The other Maha Shakti temple is that of Puruhutika Devi at Pithapuram. The place incidentally get it's name from here, it was called Pithikapuram, and believed to be place where Sati's left hand fell here. Shiva is worshipped as Kukkuteswara Swamy here,in the shape of a cock. This place is also one of the Tri Gaya kshetrams, so called after Gayasura, an Asura who was a devotee of Shiva. This is called as Pada Gaya, as his feet were here.

Puruhutika Devi at Pithapuram, has 4 hands, that contain a bag of seeds, an axe, a lotus, and a dish. Incidentally there were 2 sects worshipping her, one as Puruhita Lakshmi, following a Samyachar worship, another as Puruhitamba which followed a Vamachara worship. Also it's believed Indra prayed, to Devi here at Pithapuram, after being cursed by Rishi Gautama, for seducing Ahalya. He prayed to Puruhitika Devi and was blessed with his original form. Also Jagadguru Sripada Vallabha an incarnation of Dattatreya was born here.

Shwetarkamula Ganapati Temple, located within the premises of Kazipet Railway Station is one of the more well known Ganesha temples in Telangana. It’s believed that the Ganesha here was not sculpted, but a Swayambhu form that merged from the living root of a century-old Swetharka (White Calotropis), or what we call in Telugu as “Tella Jilledu” tree.

Ganapati faces east here, aligning with auspicious energies and invoking the dawn of wisdom, while the other deities in the temple are carved from Amrutashila, a rare stone from Mahabalipuram. When struck with a coin, they emit musical notes—turning darshan into a multisensory experience.

As per the Narada Purana, it’s believed that when a white Jilledu lives for a hundred years, the form of Ganapati manifests by itself in the roots. This Ganapati was not shaped by chisel or hand.His eyes, forehead, elbows, palms, āsana, and talpa emerged naturally from the earth whispering its devotion.

This temple was built by Inavolu Anantha Mallaiah Sharma who was serving as the priest of the Sai Baba temple near the Railway Station, after he had visited the Vara Siddhi Vinayaka Temple at Kanipakam. It’s believed he had a dream in 1996, where he saw the Swetarkamulam Ganapati in the home of one Mada Prabhakar Sarma of Nalgonda. On going to Nalgonda, he located the Ganapati under the root of the Tella Jilledu tree.

The deity was consecrated at a place called Vishnupuri near the Railway Station, and the temple was officially inaugurated on May 1999. It is built in such a way that it could be seen from both North and South, and Ganapati was installed here in the presence of five priests, symbolizing Pancha Bhuta, with a 18.5 kg silver shield affixed to it. The full fledged temple complex, was however completed by January 2008.

The temple is built in typical Kalinga style architecture, with the jagamohana and rekha deul. Apart from Ganpati, the complex also has smaller shrines to Veeranjaneya, Sita Rama Lakshmana, Venkateswara with Padmavati, Navagrahas, Subramanya Swamy and Ayappa Swamy.During every first Tuesday of the month, Ganapati Homam and Garika Puja is done by devotees.

One of the well known Ganapati temples in Andhra Pradesh is that of the Dasabhuja Ganapati at Rayadurgam. Located within the Rayadurgam Fort, this temple is believed to be over 800 years old, built during the Vijayanagara dynasty. The deity is a monolithic sculpture, standing 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide, carved from a single stone.

This Ekasila form is a very rare depiction of Ganesha with 10 arms, unlike the more common two- or four-armed depictions. Each arm is said to hold a symbolic weapon representing dominion over various aspects of existence, from intellect to obstacles.

Also the Ganesha here is in a Trinetra form with 3 eyes, elevating him into same status as Shiva, suggesting omniscience past, present, and future. And the trunk here is Valampuri, turned towads right, unlike other Ganesha temples where it is to the left, traditionally associated with Siddhi Vinayaka, this orientation is considered highly auspicious and spiritually potent.

Local lore speaks of the idol being Swayambhu, discovered within the Fort and believed to grow subtly over time. Devotees offer purna tenkaya (whole coconuts) and undertake 41-day vows, with many returning to share stories of fulfilled wishes and transformation.

In some traditions, Ganesha is believed to have two wives- Siddhi and Buddhi. raditionally, Siddhi represents spiritual attainment and Buddhi symbolizes intellect or wisdom. Their union with Vigneshwara reflects the synthesis of achievement and insight, both necessary to overcome obstacles and fulfill dharma.

In Tantric and Yogic symbolism, the left side is associated with Shakti, the feminine principle. By placing Siddhi on his left, Rayadurgam’s Ganapati becomes a living metaphor for divine union, where Ganesha is not just the remover of obstacles but the embodied fruit of spiritual effort.

He is also called as Siddhi Sametha Vinayaka, elevating him from a solitary remover of obstacles to a householder of fulfillment, a divine being who has already attained what others seek. It’s a rare depiction—most temples show Ganesha alone or with both consorts flanking him. Here, the embrace is intimate, symbolic, and perhaps even esoteric.

Also the deity here keeps growing every year, much like the Kanipakam Vinayaka. Traditionally Ganesha is adorned with ornaments, but the priests found that the existing ornaments are not enough, due to the growing size.

One more feature here is that devotees offer the Purna Tenkaya( full coconut) to Ganapati, without removing the hair and pulp, and make their wish. If the desired wish is fulfilled within 30-40 days, they take the Tenkaya as Prasadam.

The Rayadurgam Fort within which the temple is located was originally constructed by Junga Nayaka, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, and later fortified by Venkatapathi Nayaka, his successor. It played a key role in resisting invasions, including those by the Deccan Sultanates after the Battle of Talikota.

The fort is renowned for its nested fortification, a series of inner walls and bastions that made it nearly impenetrable. Apart from the Ganapati temple, there are smaller shrines to Hanuman, Ellamma, Prasanna Venkateswara, Venugopala, Jambukeswara, Veerabhadra, and Kanyakaparameswari.

Built primarily from granite, the fort’s architecture is rugged and functional, with minimal ornamentation. Its elevated terrain and natural rock formations were integrated into the design, making it a fortress that feels sculpted from the landscape itself.

Though Ganapati temple in Rayadurgam Fort is not very grand architecturally, it’s worth a visit to see the very rare form of Dasabhuja Ganapati with Trinetram, which you do not usually find.

These temples were built around 849-892 by the 3rd Eastern Chalukya ruler, Gunaga Vijayaditya III, of which the Golingeswara Temple, Chandrashekhara Temple and Rajarajeswara Temple are very famous.

Above all the village is famous for the 11 feet monolithic Ganesha sculpture that attracts devotees from all over.

One of the most prominent temples is the Golingeswara Swamy Temple here dedicated to Shiva. As per Sthala Purana, the Shiva Linga here was originally covered by a mound. The cow of a farmer here used to come and give milk daily. When the cow was not giving milk properly, the farmer followed it after it went to graze. He then saw the cow giving milk at that spot, and told it to others in the village.

The villagers went to that particular spot, and saw the milk in a puddle around the spot where the Lingam was burried, and dug it around. As they began to dig, the Shiva Lingam first emerged, and as they dug even more, another murthy of Subramanyeswara Swamy emerged. As the Shiva Lingam was found due to the cow, the temple built around was called as Golingeswara Swamy.

Apart from the Shiva Lingam, there is a door jamb here with a 33 line Sasanam, suggesting a temple of considerable historical weight, possibly tied to royal patronage or land grants.

The Garba Gudi has a black granite Shiva Lingam here anchoring the temple’s energy. Granite, with its density and permanence, reinforces the Lingam’s role as the immovable, eternal.

The Antarala, a narrow passage connects to the Mukha Mandapam that has many small shrines, each one a vignette, each deity a facet of cosmic play.

One of the most iconic sculptures in the temple is that of Alingana Chandrashekara, showing Shiva and Paravati in an embrace together, located in a separate shrine. Shiva as Chandrashekara (moon-crested) represents pure consciousness, while Parvati embodies dynamic energy (Shakti). Their embrace is the dance of stillness and motion, of form and formlessness.

The walls of the Garba Gudi are decorated with Kostas having sculpture, recesses housing attendant deities or narrative sculptures and mounted by Makaratoranams, ornate arches, often shaped like the mythical Makara , symbolize protection and auspiciousness. Their presence above the niches is like a celestial canopy, guarding the divine essence within.

There is a 3 sided temple to Raja Rajeshwara Swamy, that has Vinayaka, another has Kartikeya seated on a peacock, and another has a Shiva linga with the goddess Mahishasura being slain, along with Sri Rajarajeshwari, while the Chandrashekara Swamy temple has beautiful sculptures of Chandrashekhara and Parvati Devi.

There is another Shiva Temple located on the outskirts of the village, which has a Nataraja sculpture in Chatura pose. Also there is another Shiva temple right in the midst of the village, known for it’s very exquisite sculptures. One more Shiva Temple which has Ganga, Yamuna as the dwarapalakas.

The Lakshmi Ganapati Temple here is one of the more well known ones, that has a 11 feet Ekasila Ganapati, carved out of a single stone, which is visited by a large number of devotees.

As per the Sthala Puranam, Lakshmi once sought the joy of motherhood and adopted Ganesha as her son.This form of Ganesha is flanked or accompanied by Lakshmi, representing the union of spiritual and material prosperity.

Biccavolu is accesible from Kakinada, Rajahmundry by train, as well as by road. The ancient temples, the lush green paddy fields around, the coconut groves make it worth a visit.

The Sri Vigneswara Swamy Temple in Ainavilli, nestled in the lush Konaseema region, is indeed a profound spiritual landmark. With its Swayambhu Siddhi Vinayaka murthy, this temple carries the weight of antiquity and devotion, believed to be the oldest Ganesha temple in Andhra Pradesh, predating even Kanipakam.

Its location—amidst coconut groves and serene backwaters—adds a poetic layer to the experience, as if the landscape itself bows in reverence to the deity. The temple’s aura is not just devotional but deeply symbolic of Siddhi (spiritual accomplishment), making it a pilgrimage site for those seeking both worldly success and inner awakening.

There are different versions of the Sthala Puranam here.

It’s believed that Daksha, the progenitor and ritual master, performed puja to Vinayaka here before commencing the Daksha Yajna. This act sanctifies the site as one of the earliest Swayambhu Vinayakshetras—where Ganesha is believed to have manifested on his own, without installation. The Krita Yuga association elevates its antiquity, placing it in the realm of primordial dharma.

The Sthala Purana affirms Ainavilli as older than Kanipakam, placing it in the Krita Yuga and marking it as a Swayambhu Vinayaka Kshetra—a site where Ganesha emerged from the earth itself. This lends Ainavilli a cosmic primacy: it’s not merely a temple, but a source-point of Vinayaka’s presence in the southern sacred geography.

In 1320 CE, during the time of Sripada Srivallabha, the villagers of Ainavilli performed a Swarna Ganapati Mahayagna, as recorded by Shankarabhatu in the Sri Pada Sri Vallabha Charitra. During this yagna, Vinayaka appeared in the sacrificial fire, accepted the offerings, and blessed the devotees—a moment of divine descent into ritual space.

Three individuals mocked the sanctity of the yagna and disrespected Lord Vinayaka. As a karmic consequence, they were reborn as mute, deaf, and blind—a triad of sensory deprivation symbolizing spiritual ignorance.In a later birth, they recognized the divine emergence of Vinayaka at Kanipakam, where the murti is said to have grown from the earth and continues to expand—a moment of anugraha (grace) and jñāna (awakening).

Most Hindu temples face east, aligning with the rising sun and invoking Surya’s life-giving energy. But Ainavilli’s Vinayaka faces south, a direction traditionally associated with Yama (death) and Karma—making this temple a bold invocation of obstacle removal in the face of destiny.

In Vaastu and Tantric traditions, south-facing deities often symbolize direct confrontation with karmic challenges, and empowerment through transformation.

The temple’s Simha Dwaras are not just ornamental—they’re guardians of prosperity. Locals believe that homes with south-facing Simha Dwaram in Ainavilli are blessed with obstacle-free living, echoing the temple’s own orientation and protective aura.

Interestingly the Kanipakam temple connects with the Ainavilli one. It's believed there were 3 Atheists, who once mocked Ganesha, and were cursed to be born as 3 brothers who were blind, deaf and dumb.

These brothers discovered the Ganesha in Kanipakam while digging the well. On discovering the Ganesha murthy in a well in Kanipakam, they built a temple for it and were redeemed of their curse. Ainavilli is quite a popular temple in Konaseema, and is worth a visit, with it's picturesque surroundings.

Swetharkamoola Ganapathi Temple in Kazipet is a radiant jewel in Warangal’s spiritual landscape. The murthy here is not sculpted from stone but naturally formed from the root of the sacred white Calotropis plant (Swetharka), making it one of the rarest manifestations of Ganesha. Its white hue is both visually striking and symbolically potent—evoking purity, sattva, and transcendence.

Carved from a single block of black granite, the 15-foot tall idol of Lord Ganesha stands in a rare Dashabhuja (ten-armed) form, with his trunk curving to the right, symbolizing the fiery path of Siddhi and Riddhi through discipline and tapas.

After the duel, Jambavan offered both the jewel and his daughter Jambavati in marriage to Krishna.This temple is the only one in India where Krishna is flanked by Satyabhama and Jambavati, his two consorts from this legend.

Revered as Jatayu Kshetra, where Jatayu is believed to have fought Ravana during his abduction of Sita.The temple was originally built at Manchalakatta, and later relocated to Jetaprolu due to the Srisailam Dam project.

ISKCON, Tirupati, near Tirumala Hills with gilded facade, towering gopuram, and rich spiritual programs. ISKCON, Vizag at Sagar Nagar near beach, known for its serene architecture, goshala, and vibrant festivals.

As per Sthala Puranam, it’s believed a Yaksha named Keela, performed severe penance for Durga on the banks of Krishna river, and appearing before him, told him to ask for a boon. Keela who was overwhelmed with joy, said “Mother, you should always be in my heart. This is the one and only my desire”.

To which Durga replied “My son reside here only in the form of a mountain, after slaying the demons, I shall come to be in your heart”.

And true to her promise after slaying Mahishasura, she appeared on the Keela mountain with eight arms, shining like gold with the hue of crores of suns, that gave her name of Kanaka Durga. As Indra and all other Devatas visited this hill to pay obeisance to her, it came to be known as Indrakeeladri.

Then Brahma desired that Shiva should also appear on the hill, and performed the Sata Aswamedha Yagna, by which Shiva manifested himself , and was called Malleswara, as Brahma had worshiped him with Jasmine flowers( Malli).

It’s believed that Arjuna did the penance for Pasupatastra here, and Shiva wanting to test him appeared as a Kirata. Both of them shot a boar, and claimed they had done it first. There was a mighty duel between Arjuna and Kirata, before the former realized that it was none other than Shiva himself and sought forgiveness. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva granted him the powerful weapon.

There is also another story, about how Indrakeeladri was blocking the passage of Krishna river. When Krishnamma implored Arjuna to create a passage, he created a large passage way enough for the river to flow through, and that also accounts for the name Bezawada after Bezzam( Hole). Vijayawada is believed to have got it’s name for the fact that Durga rested here after her victory over Mahishasura.

During the Kali Yuga, Adi Shankaracharya visited the temple atop Indrakeeladri Hill, where Durga is believed to have manifested as Mahishasura Mardini. He installed the Sri Chakra at the feet of Kanaka Durga, initiating Vedic worship practices and ending animal sacrifices, aligning the temple with the Sri Vidya tradition. His visit reaffirmed the temple’s status as a spiritual epicenter, blending Advaita philosophy with Shakti devotion.

Unlike other temples, Devi here is on the right side of Malleswara Swamy, signifying her prominence on the hill. Also she looks towards the North East with a smile and bliss, due to which devotees are blessed with whatever they desire.

The main deity is around 4-foot-high bedecked in glittering ornaments and bright flowers. Her icon here depicts her eight-armed form, each holding a powerful weapon, in a standing posture over the demon Mahishashura and piercing him with her Trishulam.

Apart from Devi, there are other deities in the complex, Malleswara and Nataraja Swamy in the North East corner, while Subramanya, Valli and Desvasena are on the north side of the main temple. Hanuman here is the kshetrapalaka of the temple.

During Navaratri, she is decorated in 9 different forms, on day 1, she is Swarna Kavachalankrita Durga, decked in golden armor,symbolizing divine protection, prosperity, and spiritual brilliance, which represents Shailaputri.

On day 2 she is Bala Tripurasundari, the youthful, radiant form of her,revered in the Sri Vidya tradition of Tantra. She embodies the divine as a nine-year-old girl, symbolizing innocence, purity, and immense spiritual power.

On day 3, she is Annapurna, the provider of sustenance and abundance, while on Day 4 she is worshipped as Gayatri, personification of the Gayatri Mantra, one of the most sacred hymns in Hinduism.

On day 5, she is Lalita Tripura Sundari,also known as Shodashi, Rajarajeshwari, and Kamakshi, is the radiant embodiment of Adi Parashakti, the supreme feminine energy in Hinduism. She is the central deity of the Sri Vidya tradition, revered as the most beautiful and powerful goddess across the three worlds.

On day 6, she is Saraswati the godddes of learning and knowledge, while on day 7, she is Mahalakshmi the goddess of wealth. On day 8 and 9 she is worshipped as Durga, and Mahishasura Mardini, and finally on Vijaya Dashami she is worshipped as Raja Rajeswari Devi.

Apart from Navaratri, another major festival celebrated here is Sakhambari in Ashada Maasam, for 3 days, where assumes the form of Sakambhari or Banasankari Amma, and prayers are offered to her to bless all vegetables, agriculture, and food so that they are in abundance always.

The Parasurameswara Temple at Gudimallam a small village around 13 km from Tirupati is widely regarded as housing one of the oldest known Shiva Lingas in India, with scholarly estimates placing its origin anywhere between the 3rd century BCE and 2nd century CE, likely during the Satavahana period.

What makes this temple extraordinary is the Gudimallam Lingam itself — a seven-sided monolithic structure featuring a high-relief image of Shiva as a vigorous hunter standing atop a crouching Yaksha. This anthropomorphic depiction is rare and possibly the earliest surviving image of Shiva in such form.

The complex also includes shrines of Subramanya Swamy with Srivalli and Anandavalli, Surya Bhagavan and Vinayaka. These shrines reflect a layered devotional landscape, where Vedic, tribal, and folk traditions converge. Some legends even suggest underground chambers and celestial origins for the Lingam’s stone — adding a mystical aura to the site.

As per Sthala Puranam, Parasurama, performed intense penance here to atone for beheading his mother at his father’s command.He offered a single flower daily from the Swarnamukhi River to the Lingam. When Brahma ,disguised as a Yaksha named Chitrasena, used the flower for his own worship, a fierce battle ensued. Shiva intervened merging all three — Brahma (Yaksha), Vishnu (Parasurama), and Shiva — into the Gudimallam Lingam, symbolizing the Trimurti.

Inscriptions found on the temple walls — particularly from the Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara periods — suggest renovations and patronage from around the 1st to 2nd centuries CE onward. However ASI excavations in 1973 discovered Black-and-Red Ware pottery, Satavahana-era bricks, and early structural remnants, leading ASI to date the original shrine to the 2nd century BCE, possibly even earlier.

This makes the Gudimallam Lingam one of the oldest continuously worshipped Shiva Lingas in India — older than the Tirumala temple, whose earliest inscriptions date to around the 9th century CE.

The Shiva Lingam might have been worshipped outside, and the temple built around it much later. The rectangular stone enclosure around the Gudimallam Lingam is believed to be part of the original setting, possibly dating back to when the Lingam stood in open air. Its design resembles ancient Buddhist railing motifs, hinting at cross-cultural architectural influences.

The wooden superstructure enclosing the sanctum may reflect early temple construction styles, later replaced or reinforced during Chola and Vijayanagara renovations.

Since its formal protection by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1954, the temple has undergone careful conservation, including floor-lowering excavations in the 1970s that revealed the full extent of the Lingam and its pedestal.

Noted archaelogist TA Gopinath Rao first documented about the Gudimalla Lingam in detail in his book Elements of Hindu Iconography.

The Lingam is carved from highly polished, dark brown sandstone, possibly local to the Tirupati region. Rao measured it at 5 feet in height, though the lower portion remains buried, suggesting it may be taller than recorded.

Its seven-sided shaft and distinct anatomical realism — including the glans and sloping groove — mark it as non-conventional, unlike later abstract or cylindrical Lingams.

The bent-backward posture and partly circular form of the Lingam add to its enigmatic presence.The high-relief figure of Shiva carved into the front — standing on a crouching Yaksha or Apasmara — is rendered with tribhanga grace, braided hair, and detailed ornaments.

Scholars interpret this as a fusion of phallic symbolism and divine embodiment, possibly representing Shiva as Bhikshatana or hunter, holding a ram and a pot.

This Lingam is both phallic and personified, ritualistic and representational, and perhaps the oldest surviving image of Shiva in human form. The depiction of Shiva here, is more raw,elemental and deeply symbolic.

The deer (or ram) in his right hand evokes Shiva’s Bhikshatana form — the wandering ascetic who renounces worldly attachments. The water pot in his left hand suggests purification, penance, and perhaps a yogic lifestyle.The battle axe (parasu) resting on his shoulder links him to Parasurama, and also to Shiva’s fierce, protective aspect.

The five bangles with distinct designs on each wrist and high arm rings reflect a tribal aesthetic, possibly pre-Vedic or folk Shaiva traditions. His heavy earrings and flat necklace are not royal but ritualistic, suggesting a spiritual warrior rather than a king.The thin dhoti, worn wide and extending around the Lingam’s shaft, is a masterstroke of sculptural realism — it blends human form with cosmic symbol.

Also the sculpture does not have yajnopavita, and his ong, plaited hair (not matted) and turban-like headgear suggest a forest-dwelling ascetic. The dwarf beneath his feet, often interpreted as Apasmara, represents spiritual ignorance — a motif later echoed in Nataraja iconography.

The temple is consistently referred to as Parashurameswara Temple in inscriptions spanning several centuries. While these records do not name the original builders, they meticulously document donations of land, cattle, and currency — underscoring the temple’s role as a ritual and agrarian hub.Such endowments reflect a living temple economy, where worship was sustained by community patronage rather than royal decree.

The square sanctum embedded in an apse (semi-circular rear wall) reflects one of the earliest known Hindu temple layouts, often associated with wooden or brick structures from the 2nd century BCE onward.

As per Himanshu Ray this apsidal form was not borrowed from Buddhist architecture, but part of a shared architectural design used by Hindu, Buddhist, and regional cults. The Mayamatam, a South Indian architectural treatise, explicitly lists apsidal plans among the recommended temple layouts.

Later renovations — possibly during the Chola and Vijayanagara periods — retained the original apsidal design, suggesting reverence for the temple’s primordial sanctity. The curving rear wall creates a womb-like enclosure, enhancing the symbolism of the garbhagriha as a cosmic center.

This architectural continuity — from perishable origins to stone permanence — mirrors the spiritual continuity of the Lingam itself, which has remained the focal point of worship for over two millennia.

This temple is about forty kilometers away from Tirupati and can be reached from Renigunta Airport via Papanayudu Peta. There are frequent buses from Tirupati. There is no special transport facility for this temple. The temple is worth a visit just to see a very rare form of Shiva here, and one of the oldest temples ever.

Puri, one of the holiest lands also known as Shrikshetra, Purushottamapuri, Shankakshetra, and Neelachala, is a land blessed by sages such as Bhrigu, Atri, and Markandeya. The current name is a shortened version of Jagannatha Puri.
Puri is also one of the four mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya – the others being at Dwaraka, Badrinath, and Sringeri – so it occupies quite an exalted position in Indian tradition. Apart from the Govardhana Matha established by Adi Shankaracharya, Puri is also the site of many other Mathas. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the great Vaishnava acharya who spent his final days in Puri, and is believed to have merged with Mahaprabhu Jagannatha here, established the Radhakantha Matha here. While another great Vaishnava acharya, Ramanujacharya visited Puri during the 12th century and established the Emaar Matha here.

As one enters Puri, one can see the looming shikhara of the Jagannatha Mandir, located along the Bara Danda or the main road, the only large road in the town, on which the Ratha Yatra takes place. Many places in India have been associated with some major festival, which while celebrated in every part of the country, stand out due to the sheer scale of celebrations in that city. Ganesh Puja in Mumbai and Pune, Durga Puja of Kolkata, the Navratri celebrations of Ahmedabad, Dussehra festivities in Mysore, Ram Leela celebrations in Delhi, and of course the Ratha Yatra of Puri.

While Ratha Yatra is celebrated all over Orissa and Shree Jagannatha is one of the most revered deities there, it’s the Puri Ratha Yatra that is the most famous as it’s the abode of Mahaprabhu himself. As per the Sthala Purana, Jagannatha, literally meaning Lord of the World, was worshipped as Neela Madhab by a tribal chief. The King of Puri, Indradyumna, deputed a Brahmin priest Vidyapati to find the deities and bring them to worship in his palace. Vidyapati was taken to the cave blindfolded but he managed to mark the path with mustard seeds, which later became plants.

The King along with Vidyapati went to the cave but was unable to find the deity. Later the king had a dream, in which Jagannatha instructed the king to make murtis out of the tree near the seashore. The king likewise instructed the celestial architect, Vishwakarma, to carve the murtis, to which Vishwakarma agreed, subject to the condition that at no stage in his work would he be disturbed by anyone else. However, Indradyumna’s queen broke the rule out of curiosity and Vishwakarma disappeared leaving the murtis unfinished, which also explains their rather peculiar design.

The temple is built in the typical Oriya architecture style by Raja Ananta Barma Chodaganga Dev during the 12th century A.D. and is one of the tallest structures in India, measuring a height of 214 feet from ground level. The temple is flanked by four gates known as Simha Dwara, Ashwa Dwara, Gaja Dwara, and Vyaghra Dwara. The entry is from the Simha Dwara which is on the eastern side of the temple wall, making up the outer enclosure called the Meghanad Prachir. The temple of Jagannatha was raided by invaders eighteen times and every time, the rulers put up a defiant resistance, protecting the deities Jagannatha, Balabhadra, and Subhadra from destruction, as they were always shifted to safe locations.

After the outer enclosure, there is the inner enclosure called the Kurma Bedha, which contains the sanctum sanctorum or the Vimana. This is where the Ratna Vedi is located where you get the darshan of Jagannatha along with His brother Balabhadra and His sister Subhadra. These are the three deities taken out during the Ratha Yatra, during the month of Ashada as per the Hindu calendar.

]The innermost enclosure also covers the Jagamohan or the Audience Hall where the audience is seated during the various festivals, the Natamandapa, or the Dancing Hall where dances used to be held in ancient times, and Bhoga Mandapa, or the Hall of Offerings. If one takes a closer look at the main shikhara, one can see the Nila Chakra mounted on top, and a different flag, known as Patita Pavana, is hoisted every day.

The disc itself has eight Navagunjaras carved on it, all facing the flag post, a mythical beast, prominent in Oriya folklore and culture – called so, as it is believed to be made up of nine different animals, and is regarded as another avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu, popularized by Oriya poet Sarala Das. The Nila Chakra on top of the Shikara is distinct from the Sudarshana Chakra which is placed along with the deities in the Jagannatha Temple, and it is a very revered symbol in the Jagannatha worship, symbolizing protection.

Unlike most temples in India, where the murtis are made of iron or stone, here they are made of wood, primarily from sacred Neem logs known as Daru, which are replaced every twelve to nineteen years in a ceremony known as Nabakalebara. The belief is that Jagannatha was a tribal deity originally, which accounts for a lot of tribal traditions in His worship. The Daitapatis who perform the rituals are of tribal origin, as also many other rituals followed in the Ratha Yatra. Jagannatha, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, together are considered a manifestation of Bhairava, who is worshipped in the temple along with Bimala Devi. In a sense, it is a fusion of Vaishnava, Shakta, and Shaiva panthas, along with native tribal traditions that make up Ratha Yatra. The Jagannatha worship in Puri is symbolic of the way Hinduism is practised in Odisha, a mix of Saiva, Vaishnava, Shakta, and native tribal traditions along with Jaina and Bauddha practices, making it unique in its own way.

Singha Dwara on the Eastern side is the main entrance to the Jagannatha Temple, facing east to the Bara Danda, Puri’s main road, where the Ratha Yatra procession takes place. A flight of twenty steps called the Baisi Pachaha leads into the temple. Right in front of the Singha Dwara, there is the Aruna Stambha – a huge monolithic pillar, on the top of which there is a murti of Aruna, the charioteer of Surya. It is believed that this pillar was bought from Konark to Puri, by Maratha guru Brahmachari Gosain.

The other three entrances to the Jagannatha Temple, are the Hathi Dwara (Elephant Gate), Vyaghra Dwara (Tiger Gate), and Ashwa Dwara (Horse Gate).

Within the complex, there are temples dedicated to Bimala Devi, Mahalakshmi, Ganesha, Saraswati, and Narasimha. There is a famous story of the local Gajapati ruler Purushottama Deva, marrying the Pallava princess, Padmavati from Kanchi, and it is believed the Ucchistha Ganapati deity here was gifted by her father.

One of the few temples to Vishnu in the form of Matsya Avatara is the Vedaranya Swamy temple at Nagalapuram, in Tirupati district. The place was called as Vedapuri, Vedaranya Kshetram in ancient times. It’s believed that after Vishnu in the form of Matsya Avatara, killed Somasura, who had stolen the Vedas and hid in the ocean. He then handed over the Vedas to Brahma at this spot, which has come to be known as Vedaranya, as well as Harikantapuram.

It was Sri Krishnadeva Raya who got most of the current temple built including the Sapta Dwaras, Pancha Prakaras, and exquisite sculptures. He named the village around the temple as Nagulapuram, in memory of his mother Nagamamba , which is mentioned in the inscriptions here.

The entrance to the temple under the main Gopuram is very wide, and there are two more Gopuras flanking it on either side. The main temple is in the inner courtyard, which has the deity of Vedaranya Swamy, which is represented in Matsya form, carrying the Shanku Chakra. One feature is that that the Chakra here is held in a prayoga form, read for release. Swamy Vaaru is flanked on either side by Sridevi and Bhudevi his consorts.

The complex has smaller shrines dedicated to Narsimha, Vedavalli, Veeranjaneya, and Rama, Lakshmana, Sita.

One of the main features of the temple is that on Shudda Dwadasi,Trayodasi and Chaturdhasi of Phalguna month( last week of March) , every year, the sun rays travel from the main gopuram, and fall directly on the Moola Virat( main deity) which is 630 feet away. On the first day, the sun rays fall on the deity’s feet, on the second day on the deity’s navel, and on the 3rd day, directly on the deity’s face. Many devotees visit the temple on these 3 days to witness the event, not just from Andhra Pradesh, but also neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Apart from the temple, the thick forest and hills surrounding the temple is worth exploring for it’s beautiful scenery. There is a beautiful trek where you can visit 3 waterfalls each having a deep pool of water.

The temple, the forest and waterfalls around all make Nagalapuram worth a visit. It can be reached from Tirupati, Chennai, Chittor by road.

One of the prominent Shaiva Kshetras in India, and also one of the Panchabhoota Lingams, where Shiva is represented here as Vayu( Air), and also known for the story of Kannappa Nayanar. The temple is regarded as Dakshina Kasi, as well as Rahu-Ketu Kshetram, and is located on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River.

As per the Sthala Purana, Vayu performed penance to the Karpoora Lingam and pleased with his devotion, Shiva offered him 3 boons, he would be present everywhere in the world, and also an integral part of all living beings. And the lingam worshipped by him would be known as Vayu Linga.

As per another story, once Parvati adamantly demanded Shiva to teach her the Panchakshari Mantra, and angry with her, he cursed her to be born as a human being on earth. Parvati performed penance to Shiva, and pleased with her devotion, granted her a form which was more divine than her earlier form, and taught her the sacred mantra. She is worshipped here as Gnana Prasunambika.

History

The temple was mentioned for the first time by a 3rd century Sangam era poet, Nakeeran, where he called it as Dakshina Kasi. Other Sangam era poets like Appar, Sambadar, Manikyavasagar also visited the temple.

One can find sculptures on the rocks around the temple dating to the Pallava era, who also built the ancient temple here. The Cholas under Rajendra Chola 1, renovated and built the main temple in 11th century AD here. The Dakshina Gali Gopuram was built by Kulotunga Chola 1, while Kulotunga Chola III, built the other temples in the complex.

The prakaram around the temple, and the 4 main gopurams were built during time of Viranarsimha Yaduvaraya in the 12th century. The great Vijayanagara Emperor Shri Krishnadevaraya, got the 100 pillar Mantapam with intricate carvings built around 1516, as well as the 120 feet main gopuram, towards the east, to symbolize his victory over the Gajapatis. This was the one that collapsed in 2010, and was again rebuilt and consecrated in 2017.

Architecture

This is one of the largest Shaiva temples in India, the devotees can see all the main gopurams from the shrine of Gnana Prasunambika. The temple is also known as Rahu Keta Kshetram, it’s believed that Vashishta Maharshi, suffering from the loss of his son, prayed to Shiva, who appeared before him as Panchamukhi Nagalingeswara. Since then Rahu Keta Puja is conducted here, to get rid of Sarpa Dosha.

One of the features of this temple is that Ganesha, Sri Kalahasteeswara, Gnana Prasunambika and Dakshinamurthy shrines are stragetically placed at each direction as the guardians. The Patala Ganapati temple is towards the North, Ammavaru’s temple is towards East, while Kalahasteeswara faces West, and Dakshinamurthy towads the South.

The Vayu Lingam here is made of white stone in a tall cylindrical shape, divided into 5 segments. Two lamps on either side keep continously flickering to indicate the presence of Vayu, while many other lamps her illuminate the Lingam.

There are 4 gopurams and the main 120 ft Raja Gopuram built by Shri Krishnadeva Raya. Also there is the Bhikshala Gopuram opposite the Theru Street, which forms the entrance to the temple, believed to be built by Devadasis, who worshipped Shiva as Jangama. The eastern gopuram is named after Bala Gnanambi, the northern one as Sivayya Gopuram, and the western one as Tirumanjana Gopuram, which is flanked by the Surya and Chandra Pushkarni. From the Southern gopuram, one can visit the shrine of Bhakta Kanappa and Brahma.

The Patala Ganapati shrine is located near the entrance, and only one can enter at a time descending a narrow fleet of stairs down 20 feet. There are also other Shiva Lingas believed to have been installed by Maharshis and Devatas, the Ardhanariswara Lingam by Bhrigu Maharshi, Neelakanteswara Lingam by Agastya Maharshi, Manikanteswara by Atreya Rishi and Mrityunjeswara Lingam by Rishi Markandeya. There are also Lingams believed to have been installed by Rama, Parashurama, Yama, Chitragupta and Yudhistir.

Kaalabhairava is the Kshetrapalaka, and there are shrines to Subramanya Swamy, Navagrahas, the 64 Nayanars, Venkateswara Swamy, Varadaraja Swamy within the complex. The temple has many mantapams with richly intricate carvings and frescos, that include Nagareswara Mantapam, Kota Mantapam. The coronation of Shri Krishnadeva Raya’s brother Achyuta Raya took place in the 16 pillared Mantapam in 1529.

The temple has one of the grandest Mahashivratri celebrations , where the deities of Sri Kalahasteeswara and Gnana Prasunambika are taken in a procession in the Mada streets around the temple mounted on Nandi. Lakhs of devotees attend the Brahmotsavams, from Telugu states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for those 3 days. Many folk artistes, singers, musicians, dancers attend and perform at these celebrations. Some well known artistes who performed here include actress, Bharatanatyam artiste Shobana, late SP Balasubramanyam, music director Manisharma.

Sri Kalahasti is located close to Tirupati, just an hour’s drive, the massive temple complex, the history and heritage is worth a visit.

One of the very well known temples dedicted to Ammavaru, is Chengalamma Temple at Sullurpeta, whose deity is believed to be really powerful. This is the temple visited by ISRO scientists to seek blessings for the succesful launch of their rockets from Sriharikot, as she is considered the Grama Devata of that place. The famous Pulicat lake is located nearby.

Sullurpeta located close to the Andhra-Tamil Nadu border, was originally called Subagiri, a small village populated by cowherds. One day when they had taken the cattle to graze, some of them who took a dip in the Kalangi river nearby, found themselves being swept away by the current. They caught hold of an old statue, and managed to come safely ashore.

After the river flow subsided, they discovered a magnificient murthi of Ammavaru, with 8 hands holding various weapons and crushing a Rakshasa under her feet. The villagers bought the deity on shore, and placed her under a Raavi tree, facing eastwards. The next day they came, they saw her in full glory as Mahishasura Mardini facing South.

That very night, Devi appeared in a dream to the village head, stating her desire to stay in the village, and they built a temple for her there. The village later course of time became to be known as Chengali, Chengali Peta, and during British time, it got corrupted to Sullurpeta.

The temple covers a large area, with the entrance at the east, along with the Raja Gopuram, and shrines dedicated to Shiva, Ganapathi, Naga Devatas in the complex. The main deity of Chengalamma Parameshwari is located in the Garba Gudi, and the priests here are from the Balija community who had got this temple built.

One unique feature of this temple is that it does not have any doors. It’s believed a thief had tried to enter the temple once, and the temple authorities, decided to build doors to protect the deity. However she appeared in a dream to one of them and told that there should be no barriers between me and my devotees. So the doors that were built were kept in a corner, and from the carved wood a tree emerged, which the devotees believed was none other than Ammavaru herself. And they pray to this tree, along with the main deity.

There is a Naga Lingam, and the Navagraha Mandapam near the tree. Couples seeking children tie small cradles made of cloth to the tree, and do the pradakshina around it, seeking Ammavaru’s blessings.

During every Pournami, the Maha Chandi Yagnam, Nava Kalasa Abhishekam is grandly celebrated in this temple. Many devotees visit the temple to get the ears of the girl child pierced, Aksharabhashyam, Marriage, Upanayanam ceremonies. The Ganapati Nava Ratri, Ugadi, Mahashivaratri, Nagula Chaviti are all celebrated grandly here, and many devotees not just from Andhra Pradesh, but neighboring Tamil Nadu also come.

Every 7 years, the Brahmotsavams of Ammavaru are celebrated on a very grand scale here during months of May-June for 7 days. The festivites are inaugurated with the Sudi Maanu, to which a Chakra, Black Goat, Garland are tied, and turned around. To commemorate the slaying of Mahishasura, the head of the effigy of a large bull is sacrificed. The devotees take a dip in the nearby Kalandi river, and the Teppotsavam is celebrated where Ammavaru is taken on a boat in a ceremony. And on the final day Ammavaru is paraded in a Pallaki decorated with flowers.

Sullurpeta is located on the Chennai-Howrah rail route, and is reachable by road too. The temple along with Sriharikota and Pulicat lake nearby is worth a visit.

Nandaluru is a small village located in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh, famous for the Soumyanatha Temple here. It was previously a prominent Boudha Kshetra, and there was a Boudharama at Adavuru. The place itself is surrounded by many caves, and it’s believed there is a tunnel all the way to Siddavatam Fort.

This place was previously called as Tondamandalam, Niranthapuram, it’s believed that the name comes from Nelanduluru, after the king Nalanda here, whose mistress toured this area and named it so. Another theory states that a Telugu Choda ruler built around 108 Shiva temples here, and due to the Nandis here, the place was named Nandidula Vooru, which in due course of time became Nandaluru.

The village is famous for the Soumyanatha Temple, dating around to the 11th century, built by the Chola ruler Kullotunga Chola. The temple was subsequently developed by the Kakatiyas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara rulers. As per the inscriptions, the Kakatiya ruler Prataparudra, built the Gali Gopuram for this temple, and gifted 5 villages, Nandalur, Adavuru, Mannuru, Mandaram and Hasthavaram.

Tallapaka Annamacharya visited this temple and wrote Sringara Keerthanas on Soumyanatha Swamy. The Shanku Chakra and Ratna Kireetam were donated by Chennamani, the consort of Tiruvenganadha, a local chieftain in the 16th century.

As per the Sthala Puranam, its believed that Mahavishnu while visiting the earth at behest of Narada Maharshi, found this spot near the Bahuda river and was impressed by the serene nature of the place. Observing the peace and hapiness in Vishnu’s face, Narada requested him to manifest here during Kaliyuga and bless the devotees. And that is how Vishnu appeared here as Soumyanatha.

One interesting feature is that inspite of the Garba Gudi not having any lamps, the Moolavirat( main deity) glows with a radiance, from morning to evening. The main deity of Soumyanatha stands 7 feet tall on a Padma Peetham, with 4 hands, two carrying the Shanku, Chakra, the lower right hand in Abhaya Mudra, and the lower left hand in Varada Mudra. The Garbagudi is around 100 feet away from the main entrance, from where one can get a clear view of the Lord.

The temple itself is built of red sandstone, and there is a 5 storey Rajagopuram on the eastern entrance, and a 3 storey Gopuram on the Northern side. The interiors of the temple have very richly carved sculptures, along with the Dwajastambham, Garuda Mandapam and the Balipeetam.

There is a large Yagnasala, and also smaller shrines to Narasimha Swamy, Ganapati, and Anjaneya Swamy. The Brahmotsavams here are quite grandly celebrated. The temple is around 45 km from Kadapa and 10 km from Rajampeta, is worth a visit.

Though located in the Sakhinetipalle mandal of East Godavari district, Antarvedi is closer to Narasapuram in West Godavari district.

As per the Sthala Purana, Brahma performed the Rudra Yagnam here conducted by Vashista Maharshi, and as this spot was choosen, the place got it's name from the words Anthar Vedika.

As per the Puranas, Raktavalochana, the son of Hiranyaksha,did penace to Shiva, and got a boon, that from every drop of blood from his body, falling on the sand dunes here, there would be more forms of him springing from them, making him fully invincible. With this power Raktavalochana wreaks havoc in the world, harassing the Rishis. It's believed that once Vishwamitra called him to destroy Vasishta's ashram and also kill all his sons, during the rivalry between them.

When a distraught Vashista prayed to Vishnu for help, he appeared in the form of Narasimha to slay Raktavalochana along with Lakshmi, mounted on Garuda. However due to the boon given to him, more forms of him sprang from the blood drops, wrecking terror on the field. Vishnu, then used Maya to ensure that the drops of blood from Raktavalochana fell into a river called Raktakulya, instead of the sand dunes. And proceeds to slay him with his Sudarshana Chakra.

On the request of Vasishta Maharshi, Vishnu manifests himself at Antarvedi as Lakshmi Narasimha. Since he had killed Raktavalochana in the Raktakulya river, many pilgrims take a dip in this river here.

The present Antarvedi temple was renovated by Kopanathi Krishnamma, the zamindar of Odalarevu, who was an Agnikula Kshatriya. His family had made a fortune in ship building, and his father Adinarayana had laid the foundation for the temple.

It's believed that once when his ships were lost at sea, and there was no news about them, Krishnamma made a promise to Narasimha that if he got the news about his ships reaching port safely, he would build the temple at Antarvedi in gratitude. With Antarvedi being primarily a sandy area, he used his ships to travel all the way up to Rajahmundry on the Godavari and bring the rocks, stone needed for the construction of the temple.

The Antarvedi temple consists of two stories, apart from the main deity, you also have a Ramalayam within the temple complex, as well as smaller shrines dedicated to Venkateswara Swamy, Anjaneya, Keshava within. There is a Vashista Sevashram in the shape of a Lotus right near to the Vashista Godavari, in the midst of a lake, as also an old lighthouse near the beach dating to British time.

Antarvedi also has a shrine dedicated to Aswarudambika, believed to be the sister of Narasimha Swamy. It's believed she was created by Vishnu to ensure she lapped up the blood drops falling from Raktavalochana. She is also called as Gurallaka by locals.

And the place where the Vashista Godavari meets the Bay of Bengal at Antarvedi is worth a visit, the locals call it Anna Chellala Gattu, meaning "Shore of Brother and Sister", indicating the relation between the river and sea.

The Lakshmi Narasimha temple, the meeting point of the Vashista Godavari with the Bay of Bengal, the beach, all make Antarvedi one of those places you must visit.

There are Narasimha Kshetras and there is Ahobilam, where one feels his presence and power, be it the towering Ugra Stambham, the thick jungles and trails, the 9 Narasimha temples, located within a radius of 5 km, some of which are very hard to access.

As per the Sthala Puranam, Garuda did penance in a cave(Bilam) to see Narasimha in his complete form. Pleased with his devotion, Swamy manifested himself in 9 different forms. And that is how the place got it's name. Also it's believed Ahobilam was the site of Hiranyakasipu's palace, where Narasimha ultimately killed him. The Devatas who saw his Ugra Rupa praised him as Ahobala, which became the name of the place.

"Aho Veeryam Aho Souryarn Aho Bahuparakramah Naarasimham Param Daivam Ahobilam Aho Balam"

The hill on which Garuda did penance for Narasimha is now called as Garudachalam. It also has caves where Rishis used to do meditation in ancient times.

Basically Ahobilam is divided into two parts, the Lower Ahobilam at the foothills, which is where most of the devotees visit, the temple is built in typical Vijayanagara style architecture, with carved pillars.

Upper Ahobilam is where the Nava Narasimhas are located, in deep thick jungle, some of which involve crossing some really dangerous trails, this is the tougher part to access.

The Nava Narasimhas are 1. Jwala Narasimha 2. Ahobila Narasimha 3. Malola Narasimha 4. Kroda Narasimha 5. Karanja Narasimha 6. Bhargava Narasimha 7. Yogananda Narasimha 8. Kshatravata Narasimha and 9. Pavana Narasimha.

The Bhargava Narasimha swamy temple is located at a somewhat lower altitude, it's believed Parashurama performed his penance here, there is a Bhargava Theertham.

The Yogananda Narasimha is located to South east of lower Ahobilam. It's believed that he taught Prahlada several yogic postures here, after the killing of Hiranyakasipu here.

Chatravata Narasimha swamy temple so gets it's name here, as Swamy is seated under a peepul tree, surrounded by thorny bushes.

Ahobilam Narasimha Swamy is the main temple of the 9 Narasimhas here, where he appears in his Ugra Narasimha form, and he comes in a Swayambhu form. Flanked by thick forests and hills.

Krodakara Varaha Narasimha Swamy temple is located in very thick jungle, where the main deity is in the shape of Varaha, just around 1 km away from the Ahobilam Narasimha Swamy temple.

Karanja Narasimha Swamy temple, is so called as the deity is under a Karanja tree, closer to the Yeguva Ahobilam Narasimha temple.

Malola Narasimha is where he appears in the Soumya form, along with Lakshmi. It's believed this was a swayambhu murthy that was found by Srimath Adivan Satakopa Jeeyar, the 1st seer of the Ahobila Matham. To date the Jeeyar of the Matham worships here annually.

Jwala Narasimha is the toughest of all the 9 Narasimhas to access, located in very thick forests, with a steep trail leading to it. It's believed to be the spot, where Narasimha showed his Ugra Rupam, when he tore apart Hiranyakashipu.

The Jwala Narasimha temple requires a rather ardous trek to reach it, that involves fording rivers, and a 250 step climb, followed by a 4 km walk.

Pavana Narasimha so called because it's located near the river Pavana, around 6 km from Yeguva Ahobilam temple.

Ugra Stambham a natural rock pillar formation, believed to be where Narasimha emerged from. There is a trek to the top, but very tough, meant only for the very hardy, from where you get a magnificient view of the valley.

Narasimha is worshipped as Prahalada Varada in Lower Ahobilam, flanked by his consorts Sreedevi and Bhoodevi. There is also a shrine dedicated to Chenchulakshmi here,built in typical Vijayanagara style. Ahobilam is also home to the Ahobila Matha, established around 600 years back by Srimad Athivan Satakopan, one of the prominent Vaishnava Mathams.

Ahobilam is one of the Narasimha Kshetras, you need to visit once in your lifetime, to experience the power of the Nava Narasimhas, witness the majesty of the Ugra Stambham, and savor the beauty of the hills.

As per the Sthala Purana, there used to exist flying mountains that travelled from place to place. One of them was Malayagiri, and one of it’s 4 wings fell here, the other 3 fell at Yadagiri, Mangalagiri and Nandagiri. When the mountain prayed to Vishnu for redemption, he granted the boon, that the places where the wings had fallen would be considered holy, and all these places are prominent Narasimha Kshetras.

As per Brahma Purana, Rishi Kashyapa, along with the other Saptarishis, Atri, Vasistha, Vishvamitra, Gautama Maharishi, Jamadagni and Bharadvaja performed yagna at 7 homa kundams on the hill here, and from the fire of the Yagna, Narasimha Swamy emerged in the form of a bright light, and entered a cave. The murthy of Narasimha, was installed by Kashyapa himself on an auspicious day. As the Saptarishis pleased Narasimha Swamy, with the recitation of Vedas, it was called as Vedagiri.

In the Ramayana, Shri Rama visited this place during his vanavasam, while in the Mahabharata, it’s believed Ashwathama is still doing penance here to atone for his killing of Draupadi’s five sons.

Also Shri Venkateswara is believed to have set his foot, on this hill, before leaving to Tirumala, there is a stone bearing the imprint of his foot here.

As per inscriptions, the temple here was built first by Pallava ruler Narasimha Varman in the 9th century AD. The seven homa kundams are now seven Konerus, where devotees take a dip before the Darshan of Narasimha Swamy.

The temple is considered auspicious for marriages, also it’s believed if you tie a part of your saree to a tree here, you would be blessed with children.

There is a very interesting connection between the Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Nellore and this one. During the Brahmotsavams of Ranganatha in Nellore, the Narasimha deity here is also taken in a procession, and facing Ranganatha in what is called as Edurkolu( meeting face to face).

There is also a Jonnada Kamakshamma Temple, opposite the main temple, which devotees visit, before having Darshan. The temple can be reached from Nellore city, usually by cab or auto. The temple on the hill, the greenery around, the forests around it, all make it worth a visit, along with the wind turbines nearby.

Somasila Project is one of the prominent irrigation projects of Andhra Pradesh, across the Penna River. The foundation stone for the project was laid in 1975 by then CM, Jalagam Vengal Rao. When NTR became CM and started his ambitious Telugu Ganga project, it gathered pace, and was finally completed in 1989. The dam also has the Someswara Temple nearby, which was relocated from the original village to avoid being submerged. The dam is a popular picnic spot, with it’s beautiful scenic location located around 87.5 km from Nellore city.

One more nice place to check out is Mypadu Beach, around 25 km from Nellore city, has some resorts to stay. Nice place to just relax and hangout.

Penchalakona is one of the prominent Narasimha Kshetras in Andhra Pradesh, located in Nellore district, nestled within lush green hills, a thick forest and waterfalls all around.

The temple is located at the confluence of the Nallamalla and Seshachalam forest ranges, around 3000 feet above sea level.

As per the Sthala Purana, after killing Hiranyakasipu, Narasimha Swamy, roamed around in his fierce form, frightening everyone around. It was then Lakshmi took birth as Chenchu Lakshmi, the daughter of the chieftain of the Chenchu tribes who inhabited the forests.

She approached him with devotion, offered him fruits and flowers. Pleased with her devotion, Narasimha Swamy, calmed down, married her as per tribal traditions, and then became one among the Chenchu tribe people. He bought good fortune to the Chenchus, and then manifested himself as a huge rock, due to which he is also known as Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, Sila meaning rock. The place was called as Chenchalakona, which in due course of time corrupted to Penchalakona.

Even though the temple is surrounded by very dense forest, the devotees do not suffer any insect bites or animal attacks due to the grace of Narasimha Swamy. The temple itself dates around 700 years back, and it’s believed, Bharata, the son of Shakuntala and Dushyant, from whom we get the name of our country, grew up here in Rishi Kanva’s Ashram. And the river flowing nearby the temple is called Kanvaleru which in due course of time came to be known as Kandaleru. There is an earthern dam built across the Kandaleru river under the Telugu Ganga project.

The temple was believed to have been discovered by a Boya shepherd from Gonupalli, when he went to graze his sheep in the forest, Narsimha Swamy himself appeared as an old man, and directed him to the rock. He instructed the villagers to build a temple around the rock, he also instructed the shepherd to go without looking back. However when the shepherd boy looked back out of curiosity, he turned into a rock.

The temple has a beautiful Gaali Gopuram with intricate carvings of Devatas, sculpted on them. There is also a pond called Narasimha Pushkarni, where devotees take a dip before enterting the temple.

While the temple can be reached by road, there is also a trekking route through very dense forests, for the more adventurous, where you get beautiful views of the valley and streams.

The Narasimha Swamy Brahmotsavams are celebrated on a very grand scale here during April, May on the occasion of Narasimha Jayanti.

There are many buses from Nellore, Gudur, Venkar, Ravur to Penchalakona. However except for some Dharmasatrams, there are not many places to stay,so most visit and come back the same day.
